Canadian television has rules the rest of the world does not
Canada regulates its broadcasting more closely than most countries, and it shapes both what a package costs and what actually appears on screen. Worth understanding before comparing options.
Basic is capped, everything above it is not
Providers have to offer an entry-level package at a regulated price, which sounds like protection until you see what sits inside it. The channels most households actually want are in the tiers above, sold as themed bundles or pick-and-pay at a few dollars each. Build the package you actually watch and the regulated basic price stops being the number that matters. The box rental on every screen is added on top of that again.
Simultaneous substitution, and why the ads look wrong
When a Canadian broadcaster holds the rights to a US programme, the Canadian feed is substituted over the American one, commercials included. Most of the year nobody notices. Once a year, during the biggest American broadcast of all, the whole country notices at the same time and complains about the ads. It is a good illustration of a wider point: in Canada the feed you receive is not always the feed being broadcast.
Distance is the real infrastructure problem
Canada is enormous and thinly populated outside the corridors, so a household in a city has options a household two hours north does not, at very different prices. It also shapes what a provider can promise: a service run entirely out of one American data centre behaves very differently in Whitehorse than in Mississauga, and the gap is not something a customer can fix at their end.
